The earliest Angelo settlers started arriving on the Gulf Coast in1821. David Fitzgerald arrived in this Mexican run territory in late 1821. In 1824, old three-hundred settlers David Fitzgerald, Thomas Barnett and Moses Shipman, received land grants in this area. Moses Shipman and his family settled in what would become the ‘Duke’ community in 1825. Louisa Ann Morton married Daniel Perry on December 24, 1833 and they moved to the Duke area in 1834.
